War with the ants: Victory

Day 1

Morning: No ants

Sometime in the afternoon: The kitchen is black with ants.

All evening, repeated cleaning of the ants (with bleach/water mixture in a spray bottle). No success in stopping the flow. Researched. Determined that boric acid was the solution I wanted to use. Toxicity equivilant to table salt for humans, yet capable of taking out the whole ant nest. Unable to find boric acid at local chemical supply houses, Home Depot or Rite-aid.

Day 2

Noonish: Purchase of two boxes of ant traps (Grants Ant Killer and Hot Shot). Never had success before with these, but I don't want to spray my kitchen with poison. These are bad enough as the ants trail small amounts of the poison as they walk about. Decided to add bait to the traps.

This is the breakthrough: Used the food for which they came in the house for as the bait. Within 20 minutes, the traps were the hottest thing going, with thousands of ants pouring in and out of the dozen traps.

Evening: Only two ants in sight. HungryBee thinks they're sleeping. We debated, researched. Ants do something similar to sleep, but in waves, so that part of the nest is always active while certain sections "idle".

Day 3

Morning: Saw twelve ants.

Afternoon: Saw six ants.

Evening: Saw two ants.

Didn't bother to squish any of these.

Day 4

Morning: No ants. Success.
