The Pentagon last week confirmed a report by congressional Democrats saying that the Defense Contract Audit Agency has questioned more than $1 billion of Halliburton's bills for work in Iraq under LOGCAP and an energy contract called Restore Iraqi Oil. Among the costs that Pentagon auditors questioned were $152,000 for movie rentals, $1.5 million for tailoring and two multimillion-dollar transportation bills that appeared to overlap.

Dear God.... do you think you could fix this? [Jun. 28th, 2005|04:36 pm]
[mood | sad]

...a child with painful wounds similar to burns covering most of his or her body.
...having to wrap each tiny little infant finger with Vaseline gauze and then cover it with gauze to prevent the hand from webbing and contracting.
...never being able to hold your child tight because if you did, their skin would blister or shear off.
...a child who will never know what it’s like to run, skip or jump, or to play games with other children because even the slightest physical contact will injure his or her skin.
...a child who screams out each time it is bathed because the water touching its open wounds creates incredible pain.
...a diet of only liquids or soft foods because blistering and scarring occur in the esophagus.
...an active baby with his knees soaked in blood from the normal act of crawling.
...a teenager with stumps for hands, the affected fingers long gone.

This is the nightmare of life with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB)

Watching "The Boy Who's Skin Fell Off" on TLC made me so sad and I wondered how anyone could believe in a God who would allow such pointless suffering.

Plot Summary for They Live (1988)

Nada, a down-on-his-luck construction worker, discovers a pair of special sunglasses. Wearing them, he is able to see the world as it really is: people being bombarded by media and government with messages like "Stay Asleep", "No Imagination", "Submit to Authority". Even scarier is that he is able to see that some usually normal-looking people are in fact ugly aliens in charge of the massive campaign to keep humans subdued.

Myths & Facts About Marijuana [Jun. 23rd, 2005|05:44 pm]

MYTH: Marijuana is harmless.
FACT: Marijuana is the most widely used illicit drug among youth today and is more potent than ever. Marijuana use can lead to a host of significant health, social, learning, and behavioral problems at a crucial time in a young person's development. Getting high also impairs judgment, which can lead to risky decision making on issues like sex, criminal activity, or riding with someone who is under the influence of drugs or alcohol. According to the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, teens who use drugs are five times more likely to have sex than teens who do not use drugs. Getting high also contributes to general apathy, irresponsible behavior, and risky choices.

If you are a teen, SMOKE POT! You are FIVE TIMES more likely to get laid!

fluff [Jun. 16th, 2005|03:06 pm]
Terry Moran and White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan:

Q Scott, is the insurgency in Iraq in its 'last throes'?

McCLELLAN: Terry, you have a desperate group of terrorists in Iraq that are doing everything they can to try to derail the transition to democracy. The Iraqi people have made it clear that they want a free and democratic and peaceful future. And that's why we're doing everything we can, along with other countries, to support the Iraqi people as they move forward....

Q But the insurgency is in its last throes?

McCLELLAN: The Vice President talked about that the other day -- you have a desperate group of terrorists who recognize how high the stakes are in Iraq. A free Iraq will be a significant blow to their ambitions.

Q But they're killing more Americans, they're killing more Iraqis. That's the last throes?

McCLELLAN: Innocent -- I say innocent civilians. And it doesn't take a lot of people to cause mass damage when you're willing to strap a bomb onto yourself, get in a car and go and attack innocent civilians. That's the kind of people that we're dealing with. That's what I say when we're talking about a determined enemy.

Q Right. What is the evidence that the insurgency is in its last throes?

McCLELLAN: I think I just explained to you the desperation of terrorists and their tactics.

Q What's the evidence on the ground that it's being extinguished?

McCLELLAN: Terry, we're making great progress to defeat the terrorist and regime elements. You're seeing Iraqis now playing more of a role in addressing the security threats that they face. They're working side by side with our coalition forces. They're working on their own. There are a lot of special forces in Iraq that are taking the battle to the enemy in Iraq. And so this is a period when they are in a desperate mode.

Q Well, I'm just wondering what the metric is for measuring the defeat of the insurgency.

McCLELLAN: Well, you can go back and look at the Vice President's remarks. I think he talked about it.

Q Yes. Is there any idea how long a 'last throe' lasts for?

McCLELLAN: Go ahead, Steve....

if only there was some shame... [Jun. 16th, 2005|11:26 am]
[mood | angry]

For those of you who were as disgusted by the Terri Schiavo situation as I was here is an incredible montage of the idiocy, hipocracy, and flat out LIES that all of these right-wing, religious retards flung around. We no know that the woman was BLIND (remember the balloon that she was said to have followd around teh room with her eyes?) and her brain had deteriorated to half the weight of a normal brain (which makes liars out of the nurses who said that the woman had spoken to them - it just wasnt medically possible. Maybe it was Jesus!).

Schiavo's brain at death was found to be 615 grams, roughly half the mass expected for a female of her age, height, and weight. Of the 615 grams of tissue, much of it had degenerated. The autopsy report indicates that sections of Shiavo's brain were examined under microscope. The cerebellum contained no neurons. In the basal ganglia, an occasional rare neuron was located. Because of extensive damage to her occipital lobes, she would have been cortically blind. The autopsy report notes for comparison that the brain of Karen Ann Quinlan weighed 835 grams at the time of her death after 10 years in a persistent vegetative state.

Even the one of the founding figures of conservatism Barry Goldwater said in 1965:
I'm frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in A, B, C, and D. Just who do they think they are? And from where do they presume to claim the right to dictate their moral beliefs to me?

This kind of dogshit can't usually be removed from the sidewalk of life but the least we can do is tell everyone, "Hey!, don't step in that!"

P.S. Fuck you Sean Hannity and everyone else who set up a media circus outside the hospice where people were grieving and dying. Fuck you. Fuck you. Fuck you.

This time, it's for real: Save NPR and PBS [Jun. 14th, 2005|04:45 pm]
[mood | disappointed]

Hi,

You know that email petition that keeps circulating about how Congress is slashing funding for NPR and PBS? Well, now it's actually true. (Really. Check the footnotes if you don't believe me.)

Sign the petition telling Congress to save NPR and PBS:

http://www.moveon.org/publicbroadcasting/

A House panel has voted to eliminate all funding for NPR and PBS, starting with "Sesame Street," "Reading Rainbow," and other commercial-free children's shows. If approved, this would be the most severe cut in the history of public broadcasting, threatening to pull the plug on Big Bird, Cookie Monster, and Oscar the Grouch.

The cuts would slash 25% of the federal funding this year—$100 million—and end funding altogether within two years. The loss could kill beloved children's shows like "Clifford the Big Red Dog," "Arthur," and "Postcards from Buster." Rural stations and those serving low-income communities might not survive. Other stations would have to increase corporate sponsorships.

If we can reach 250,000 signatures by the end of the week, we'll put Congress on notice.

http://www.moveon.org/publicbroadcasting/

Thanks!

P.S. Read the Washington Post report on the threat to NPR and PBS at:

pope pope give [Apr. 1st, 2005|01:15 pm]
So the Pope is about to kick the bucket and all of the news reports say that Catholics everywhere are rushing to the churches to pray. What are they praying for? His Health? Are they praying that he makes it into heaven? Are they praying that whoever takes his place doesnt drool all over his expensive Pope-threads? Anyone know? If prayer works then he ought to be alive longer than our social security system.

"I love the Pope, I love seeing him in his Pope-Mobile, his three feet of bullet proof plexi-glass. That's faith in action folks! You know he's got God on his side." --Bill Hicks
